EXCERPT ...

Today is my twenty-sixth birthday, and I was sitting in the plush offices of Bannister and Associates - Attorneys at Law, waiting for my Uncle Frank to arrive for an appointment both of us have with Daniel Bannister himself.

I let my mind wander back in time to five years ago - to the night that changed the course of my life forever.

Even after all this time, I can still recall the faces of the two police officers standing in front of me, with sadness in the depths of their eyes. Blood rushed furiously through my ears, deafening me, just like it did that night, and I shifted on my seat in the luxurious waiting area, clearing my throat to keep my emotions in check.

Being told my parents will never be coming home, crushed my soul. My whole world fell apart within a matter of seconds.

Everything that happened in the few days following, was still a blur. No matter how hard I tried to make sense of everything that had happened in that time, the images were as muddy today, as they were five years ago.

But one memory remained, as clear as day.

The name Bryce Ronald Caldwell will be permanently tattooed inside my mind.

The now thirty-four-year-old is responsible for turning my life completely on its head. His drunk ass reaching for his ringing cell phone, caused Jarvis to swerve out of the path of his red BMW that crossed into their lane, to avoid a head-on collision.

But the front, right fender of the BMW struck the right back panel of the limousine, spinning it out of control, and causing it to slam into a large power pole, splitting both the pole, and the limousine, in half.

When the wires came down, one snaked through inside the top of the wrecked vehicle, like a raging serpent, electrocuting Jarvis first, while his seat smoldered until the first lick of flame erupted into an inferno, and set his seat on fire.

My father was next, when he tried to shield my mother from the frenzied thrashing of the live wire, but he didn’t stand a chance when it sliced through him across his back.

By the time the high voltage powerline slashed across the front of my mother’s exposed throat, she’d witnessed the horror of watching her long-time friend, and the love of her life, die.

And I’ve spent the last five years preparing for revenge.

Bryce Ronald Caldwell was due to be released at the end of next week, after serving a mere five years in prison for dangerous driving causing death.

I seared his image in my head - attending his trial incognito to ensure no-one was able to identify me, and sitting obscurely in the back of the public gallery of the courtroom, every, single day.

I was more than ready.
