EXCERPT ...

My gut was telling me something was wrong with the scene playing out in front of me. But what? I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Kiara left the mysterious guy’s side, and made her way to the bar. He’d obviously asked her to get some drinks. He was engaged in conversation with two men who seemed to be with him. They both looked very stiff, and formal, constantly watching all around them in a professional way.

Kiara rejoined him, handing him some sort of drink. I noticed the two guys with him didn’t have one. Are they security? I frowned. It was the most likely explanation the way they were acting, poised, and ready for anything. He has to be someone of importance if he was being flanked by security.

Now my curiosity was definitely piqued. Toni’s attention had returned to Sally as I continued to watch the interaction between Kiara, and the mysterious stranger. Up until someone barreling through the front door caught my attention.

Fuck. Webber! For the first time since I met him, he actually looked angry. Where’s Angel? I searched the group, and sighed, relieved when I saw her talking to Phoebe.

“What do you looked so pissed about?” Toni questioned me curiously.

I’ve learned in the last couple of weeks that Toni was very quick on the uptake. Not much got passed her.

“Did you know Webber’s returned from Spain?” I asked casually.

Her jaw dropped as she stared back at me in surprise.

“Noooo. Has he?”

I nodded toward the doors.

“Just saw him come in. And if you think I look pissed, God only knows how you’d describe the thunderous expression on his face.”

“Shit---we should tell Angel.”

“Why?”

“If she sees him, at least she’ll be prepared if we warn her he’s here.”

I didn’t want to tell her, but I had to agree. Forewarned, was forearmed.

“Hey, Angel?” I yelled over in the direction where her, and Phoebe, were talking, and beckoned with my hand for her to come to Toni, and me. “Come over here for a sec?”

“What?” Angel questioned.

“When did Webber get back?”

Her spine immediately stiffened, and her height grew in stature, while her lips pursed into a straight line.

I wouldn’t know,” she answered in a stony voice.

She tried to play down the nerves, but I saw her flinch. I also saw the way her eyes were scouting the entire club. Fucking hell! What is it with this bloke? He pisses her off royally, and she’s still seeking him out? I joined her, and did a quick search with my own eyes, but I couldn’t see him anymore.

“Are you sure it was Levi?” she asked me doubtfully.

“I’m sure. I couldn’t mistake his ugly mug.”

Not after I’ve committed every contour of his cheek bone to memory as my fist had smashed against it. It was him. I wasn’t seeing things that weren’t there.

“He’s here. I saw him.”

Toni shrugged her shoulders at me, and looked away. She hadn’t seen him, either. Minutes passed, and I started thinking maybe I had just imagined seeing him---until I picked out his form barging through the crowd straight in our direction, like a raging bull. I placed a hand on Angel’s arm, and drew her to my side, locking onto her.

“Chase, what in the hell?” she protested.

My steely gaze met his unwaveringly across the crowd as he continued to bear down on top of us, like an out of control locomotive.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” I murmured quickly.

She stopped trying to tug her arm out of my grip when she saw him, and instinctively stepped slightly behind me. I tensed, ready for a fight, and stepped right into his path.

“Move---I’ve had no sleep for the last forty seven hours, and I’m in no mood for your shit, Anderson.”

“Then you’re in no shape to be talking to Angel, until you can be more civilized.” I responded tersely.

Without warning, his right fist swung up, and caught me off guard, slamming hard into the side of my jaw, knocking me completely off balance, and I landed hard on the floor on my ass.

“Levi!”

I heard Angel’s scream as she shoved him furiously in the chest with both hands. She wasn’t quick enough to evade his lightening reflexes, and the grip of his hand on her arm.

You are coming with me!” he growled.

She was protesting, loudly, when he dragged her off, while I was still trying to get to my feet with Toni’s help. She held me back when I tried to go after Angel.

“Don’t---let her handle it. She’ll only transfer all her anger toward you if you try and intervene.”

The logical side of my brain agreed with her. The Neanderthal part wanted to rip him limb from limb! Logic won out, and I stayed where I was, seething about Webber’s return, and the way he’d manhandled Angel when I noted Kiara making a move with the mysterious stranger toward the entrance doors.

He is being flanked by those two men. I’ll bet he is another client. He’s definitely someone important. There was a niggling feeling still in my gut. Something was off about that guy. But as they disappeared from view, my thoughts returned back to Angel.

What in the hell is going on? If Webber hurts her in any way, I was prepared to beat the utter shit out of him.
