So, after trying to choose from 4 different excerpts I would have liked to post, I've chosen this one from Chase. Those of you who may find course language offensive, just scroll on past.

His Word ... Detraction

Book Two

The Shattered Series

(Unedited) EXCERPT... (so please excuse any mistakes)

Fuck. I was suddenly wide awake and my heart hammered inside my chest. It took a moment for me to get my bearings and remember where I was. What in the fuck woke me?

“No … no … NO!”

Angel! I threw the covers off and scrambled out of bed. From the level of fear I’d heard in her voice, I knew she was having another one of her nightmares. Fumbling around in the dark, I located the lamp on the cabinet at the side of the bed. When I flicked it on, my room lit up in a dull glow. Wrenching the top drawer open, I pulled out a pair of jocks and quickly stepped into them. I couldn’t exactly go wake her up while I was stark naked.

I raced out of my room and barged straight into hers. The dim lighting from my room had penetrated the darkness enough that I was able to make out her thrashing form. I hurried over and climbed onto her bed to grab both of her shoulders.

“Angel … wake up,” I called to her as I shook her. She kept thrashing around beneath her covers, so I shook her even harder. “Angel! Wake up.” Two things happened at once. Angel woke up with a scream that pierced my eardrums and her room was bathed in light.

My eyes squinted as they tried to block out the sudden intrusion while Angel bolted upright and wrapped her arms around my neck in a grip of death as she began to sob. She wore the same ratty, over-sized t-shirt she slept in when I stayed with her and Toni in their two bedroom place.

“Is she okay?” Elaine asked with concern from the doorway. I looked over my shoulder to answer her.

“Yeah, I think so. Just another nightmare. Go get some more sleep. I’ll stay with her until she’s calm.” With a nod, Elaine turned and headed back to her bedroom. I wrapped one arm around Angel’s lower back and the other around her shoulders. I held her to me until her sobs decreased to hiccups. “You still have those nightmares?”

She didn’t answer. She just nodded as she tightened her arms around my neck. I released her from my hold and rubbed both palms up and down her the tops of her arms.

“Come on, Baby. You need to get some more sleep.” I attempted to pull her arms away from around my neck, but she resisted.

“I don’t want to sleep alone,” she whispered. Jesus Christ. Closing my eyes, I inhaled a deep breath.

“You want me to lay with you?”

“Will you?” And have the chance to hold you in my arms? Is there any doubt?

“Of course.” She slowly released her hold and leaned back until she was laying with her head on her pillow. I got up and pulled the covers over her. “I have to go and turn the lamp off in my room. I’ll be back in a minute.” Her eyes never left mine as I stood up and crossed to the doorway. Once I switched my lamp off, I returned and flicked the switch on the wall in her room as I reentered, plunging it back into darkness.

“Chase?” she called out.

“I’m still here,” I reassured her as I made my way back to her bed. I felt around in the dark before I pulled the covers down on the opposite side and slid in. As soon as I pulled them up to cover me, she shuffled over to my side. Turning to lie on my side, I opened my arms. One threaded beneath her neck, my fingers almost tangling through her hair while I placed the other over her hip. When she snuggled into me and wrapped one arm over my waist, I leaned down to drop a kiss on the top of her head. “Get some sleep, Angel,” I whispered.

Holding her in my arms, with her delicious curves pressed up so close to me began to have an affect on me. When my cock pulsed to life and started to thicken, I shifted my hips backward. As Angel’s breaths finally began to lengthen, I knew sleep wasn’t an option for me. I breathed deep, filling my lungs with the smell of her hair.

God I’ve missed this. I’d come to terms with the fact that Angel was out of my reach when I’d dated Toni. I thought I’d been okay with that … that I was finally going to be moving on without her in my life. But carrying her in my arms up to that beach on asshole’s island the day of her wedding, the truth had slammed into me. It didn’t matter how hard I tried to convince myself or Toni that I was over Angel, it hadn’t worked. Deep down, I think Toni knew that, too. When she sent that text telling me she didn’t think our relationship would work out, I’d felt relieved. I didn’t have to pretend any more. Except around Angel.

I moved my arm from around her hip and slid it up to cradle the back of her head, then dropped a couple more kisses down on top. With a yawn, I realized how tired I was. Taking slow, deep breaths, I finally felt myself relax into the mattress, content with Angel in my arms.
