EXCERPT ...

“Levi, I don’t want some fancy big wedding. I just want to keep it simple, and private.” He threw his head back, and laughed loudly.

“I’m afraid that’s not going to be possible, Baby,” he rubbed the outside of my thigh sympathetically. “Mother is right about one thing. You have to be realistic. Don’t forget just whom you’ve agreed to marry.” Oh, Jesus H Christ. With a groan of despair, I clutched my head in my hands. This wedding’s going to end up being a fucking circus! That wasn’t something I considered when I accepted his proposal.

Speculation that one of the most eligible bachelors on the planet was no longer on the market, was being widely reported in the media by the time we arrived back at Tranquil Gardens. Although nothing was officially confirmed, Levi’s assistant was already receiving a number of calls asking to deny, or confirm the rumors. What in the hell---did Levi’s mother contact the press as soon as we walked out her front door? That was the only explanation I came up with over how they knew so quickly.

Toni organized a quiet gathering at Tranquil Gardens to announce our engagement to our close circle of friends. Everyone seemed ecstatic by our announcement, congratulating us, and ooing, and aahing over my ring. Elaine pulled me quietly aside after all the initial excitement waned.

“Angel---you’re not going to be able to keep this quiet for very long.” Levi and I had already engaged in a heated discussion about an official photo shoot to announce it to the world. That was something I wanted to delay as long as possible. “Marrying someone of Levi’s influential stature---everyone’s going to want to know all they can about you.” I groaned. My anonymity was quickly becoming something of the past.

“I know,” I sighed gloomily. “I just hope no one digs far enough to uncover skeletons that I don’t want dug up.” She placed her hand tenderly on my arm.

“This engagement is going to create a flurry of interest, Angel. I want you to prepare yourself for that, especially when Nathan finds out.”

Unease took root in the pit of my stomach. After rejecting Nathan’s proposal the way I did when he asked me in between beatings one month, I knew he wasn’t going to take this announcement lying down. Publicly announcing I was to marry one of the wealthiest men in the world, will rub his nose in it. And he didn’t like to lose.

“There’s always gonna be sleeze-bags who will dig until they find something. Even if there’s nothing to find, some will fabricate something, just to make things appear juicier than they are,” she gazed sympathetically at me. “You’re going to have to accept the fact that someone will find out about you and Nathan---and maybe more.” My heart lurched with renewed fear---Is she subtly warning me about my estranged family’s secrets? “More likely than not, someone will provide them with information.”

My thoughts immediately focused on Kiara. She knew too much, and now she and Nathan were fuck-buddies, she has the ability to cause all sorts of havoc if she wants.

Elaine’s family were affluent members of society, and she was brought up in the limelight as a result. I managed to remain firmly in the background when I lived with them, but I had a good idea what I was in for.

All I was doing was prolonging the inevitable. Hiding in the calm, before the storm hit. Even that was getting harder by the day with Levi pushing to publicize it.
