EXCERPT ...
For the rest of the afternoon, images of Levi slamming me up against the wall of the elevator, or stripping me of my trousers when we tumbled out of it and into the penthouse suite, kept intruding, and distracting me from my work.
He’d been rough---demanding---possessive in his taking of me. And I’d loved every fucking second of it. I smiled when I recalled him banning me from ever wearing pants to work again. For God’s sake, Angel, concentrate. At this rate, I’ll still be here at midnight.
When it was time to leave, we locked the front of the building, and made our way to her beat up Toyota in the furthest parking bay in the parking lot. Toni couldn’t even wait two minutes. She started firing questions at me, before she even reversed out of the bay.
“How long were you in Roxby’s? Was it slow, and sensual, or fast, and hard?” She took her eyes off the road for a few seconds to wiggle her eyebrows at me. I rolled my eyes in annoyance in response. “What’s it like inside, you never answered me before?” Heaving a huge sigh, I knew I had to provide some sort of an answer to her questions, or I’d never hear the end of it.
“Less than an hour---I’m not telling---and I didn’t get much of a chance to look around.” She giggled quietly and flicked me a quick look. I sighed again, seeing the twinkle of curiosity still in her eyes.
“I don’t s’pose you did!” Although I gave absolutely no details what-so-ever, the sly little grin she had on her face, told me I’d already answered by telling her I hadn’t taken a look around. I knew there was more intrusive interrogation to come in her quest for information some other time.
She’d taken such an avid interest in my renewed love life. At times, an unhealthy interest. It was almost like she was living her love life vicariously through mine.
“Less than an hour? That quick, huh?” It may not sound like much time, but what Levi managed to achieve in the time frame we had to work with, was fine by me.
“That was more than enough time, I can assure you!” The last thing I wanted her to think was that Levi was some sort of a quick draw McGraw.
“Really?” she drawled, unconvinced. “So did he get you there, or what?”
“Toni!”
“What? I’ve been with a few guys who haven’t got me there in two hours, let alone in less than one.” Oh, what the hell.
“Three,” I mumbled quietly, going bright red. Thank God she’d stopped at a red light. If she hadn’t, I think she would have run off the road in shock.
“Three times? Are you fucking serious?” She turned her head, her jaw dropping open, and stared at me to see if I was pulling her leg. I nodded my confirmation that she heard correctly. “Damn! Now I do want details!” Oh, crap. She’s never going to let up now.
“Light’s green, Tone,” I pointed, and was glad she re-focused on driving.
“Well, come on---details, missy!”
“No way---none of your business.” I absolutely refused to give in, and she eventually gave up trying to badger me. Only because she pulled up in our driveway, but I had to thank God for small mercies.
“Did we lock the front door this morning?” Toni asked distractedly. I immediately looked over at the front door. It was slightly ajar.
“Yes--We did.” My stomach dropped. We’ve been burgled. Shit. What if someone is still in there? I grabbed Toni’s arm when she started to open her door.
“Wait, Tone. There could be someone still in there.”
“For their sake they better not be,” she bit out angrily. Her dilated brown eyes stared straight at me with a determined look in her eye, and her sultry, normally pouty lips, were pressed together in an angry line. “Between the two of us, we can take ‘em on. Time you tested out all your martial art shit you’ve been doing.”
“What if there’s more than one? What if they have a knife?” Or, even worse, “maybe even a gun?” That didn’t halt her getting out of the car, but she did pause long enough to bend down, and pointedly stare at me once more.
“I’m calling the cops.” She picked up her phone as she shut her door gently, and quietly. I carefully opened my door, and got out, hissing at her as I quietly shut it.
“Fine---but if I get shot by someone, and I don’t die, I’m going to kill you.”
While she relayed information to the police, I tried to keep my heart rate in check. Being Friday, Turner and Hollingsworth weren’t here to greet us after work, knowing Levi was scheduled to pick me up.
I still wasn’t used to their intimidating presence every time we arrived home this week, but I sure wished like hell the bulky, and aggressively trained individuals were here to greet us when we came home today.
The closer we got to the door, the more nervous I was. Fuck. What if there is someone in there, and I freeze, and forget what to do? Now, I just felt sick. I stuck the palm of my hand on the door to edge it open, while Toni came up, and stood close to my left side.
